Shunpei Yamazaki received the B.E., M.E., Ph.D., and honorary degrees from Doshisha University, Japan, in 1965, 1967, 1971, and 2011 respectively.
He is the founder and president of Semiconductor Energy Laboratory Co., Ltd. He was awarded Medal with Purple Ribbon by the Japanese Prime Minister’s Office for the innovation of MOS LSI element technology in 1997 and was the winner of the Okochi Memorial Technology Prize in 2010. He also received the Medal for Leadership in the Advancement of Ceramic Technology from the American Ceramic Society (ACerS) in 2016. He is a holder of Guinness World Record under the category of “most patents credited as inventor”, for the total of 11,353 patents as of June 2016. He is a life fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., a member of the Japan Society of Applied Physics, a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, and Board of Trustees of Ceramic and Grass Industry Foundation (CGIF), the American Ceramic Society. He has published or co-published over 500 papers and conference presentations. He also has published three jointly edited books on crystalline oxide semiconductor CAAC-IGZO from John Wiley & Sons, Inc: “Physics and Technology of Crystalline Oxide Semiconductor CAAC-IGZO: Fundamentals”, “Physics and Technology of Crystalline Oxide Semiconductor CAAC-IGZO: Application to Displays”, and “Physics and Technology of Crystalline Oxide Semiconductor CAAC-IGZO: Application to LSI”.
In recent years, he and his team have been engaging in a research of crystalline oxide semiconductor (c-OS) technology, used in high-quality IGZO materials for extremely low-power LSI chips. Devices such as FPGAs, non-volatile memory devices which adopt this technology have been prototyped and the prototypes succeeded in significantly reducing power consumption. This technology also can be used for AI chips that have drastically lower power consumption than that of conventional solutions, allowing AI functionality at the edge.
